An errant firework is to blame for considerable damage done to the playground at the Jasper Elementary School. The incident happened Saturday morning and the playground, with about half of the equipment burned, is closed until further notice.
Jasper Schools Superintendent Kimberly Liggett says it appears the blaze was started from a firework that was shot off from outside of the playground.

Liggett says the playground equipment that was damaged was a large piece that has a plastic on it which did not fare well in the fire.

Liggett says it will be tough to either have the playground equipment repaired or new equipment in place by the time school starts Aug. 12.

Even if the damaged playground equipment isn’t ready for the start of the school year, the Jasper Schools Superintendent says there are still plenty of options for the students at recess time.

Liggett says they are waiting on the insurance adjuster to find out what the total amount of damage will be.
