A Baxter County resident has been recognized by the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund as its July 2026 Student of the Month.
Zachary A. Brown was honored for his dedication to higher education while balancing work and raising his 9 year old son as a single father.
Brown is currently attending Arkansas State University Mountain Home, where he is studying special education and business while also working for Goodyear. He said returning to school was motivated by a desire to create a more stable future for himself and his son.
Before enrolling in college, Brown said he felt he had reached a plateau in his career despite working hard. He decided that earning a degree would provide better long term opportunities for his family.
Brown said his experiences as the parent of a child with special needs inspired him to pursue a degree in special education. His goal is to become a teacher who provides patience, understanding, and support for children with special needs and their families.
The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund says Brown has demonstrated determination while balancing the demands of school, work, and parenting. According to the organization, he continues to find motivation in spending time with his son, whether picking him up from school or enjoying time together at the lake.
Brown also expressed gratitude to the donors who make scholarships possible, saying their support has given him stability, confidence, and the opportunity to pursue a career that will benefit both his son and others in the special needs community.
The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund is a statewide nonprofit dedicated to helping single parents overcome poverty through higher education. Since 1990, the organization has awarded more than $50 million in scholarships while providing support services that help parents complete their education and pursue higher paying careers.
