North Jersey Warns Residents: Stay Alert as Coyote Sightings Rise, Keep Pets Safe

Two dogs survived attacks by coyotes on Tamboer Drive in North Haledon. Authorities issued warnings. Both animals made it through without serious harm, the North Haledon Police Department confirmed.

The run-ins served as a stark reminder that coyotes roam throughout the borough at all hours, appearing in backyards and streets without warning. Police received word about both incidents on June 17.

The Glen Rock Police Department spotted two coyotes last weekend near Dunham Place and in the woods behind Faber Field, according to News 12.

Keep dogs on leashes during walks. Don’t leave pets outside alone, particularly at dawn and dusk when coyotes hunt most. Cats should stay indoors.

Take away anything that might draw wildlife to your property. Pet food left in bowls, bird seed scattered on the ground, and trash cans without lids all invite trouble.

If you see a coyote, make yourself look big. Shout. Wave your arms. Back up while watching it. This discourages the animal from getting closer.

“Coyotes can be found in any neighborhood, so awareness and prevention are key,” police said, per the Daily Voice. “By taking a few simple precautions, you can help keep your pets safe while coexisting with local wildlife.”
