By rssfeeds-admin The 2026-2027 Best Global Universities list examined more than 2,250 schools across over 100 countries. What did they check? Research output and what scholars thought about each school.
Harvard University grabbed No. 1. MIT took second. Stanford came in third. The University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge completed the top five.
Rutgers University–New Brunswick sat at 155th, climbing one slot from last year. Rutgers University–Newark landed at 688th. New Jersey Institute of Technology ended up at 1,070th.
Stevens Institute of Technology claimed 1,158th. Montclair State University got 1,607th. Rowan University reached 1,734th.
Rowan shocked many by leaping nearly 150 spots in just one year. Most other schools in the state slipped down the list.
“Our methodology focuses on a school’s research mission and scholarly impact, helping students identify institutions that are truly at the forefront of global knowledge creation,” said LaMont Jones, managing editor for education at U.S. News, according to NJ.com.
Schools needed at least 1,250 research papers published between 2020 and 2024 to get on the list. China had the most schools with 409. The United States came next with 275.
New Jersey welcomed 26,738 students from other countries in 2024-25. That’s a 15.1% jump from the year before — more than 3,500 additional students.
Several big schools in the state saw more students from abroad last year, including Rutgers–New Brunswick, Stevens Institute of Technology and Princeton. These students often pay the full price of out-of-state tuition. They help keep school budgets afloat and make it possible to offer scholarships to students from the U.S.
