Person found dead outside downtown Bloomington business

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — June 10, 2026

A man was found dead Wednesday morning outside a business in downtown Bloomington, according to the Bloomington Police Department.

Officers and emergency medical personnel responded at approximately 8:45 a.m. to the 200 block of North Walnut Street after a caller reported finding a man who appeared to be unconscious and not breathing in front of a business on the east side of the street.

Police and EMS personnel determined that the man was dead.

Investigators found no obvious signs of trauma, according to police. The man’s identity had not been confirmed as of Wednesday afternoon, and his cause and manner of death remain unknown.

Eric Brown told The Bloomingtonian he was downtown around 8:30 a.m. when he saw the man lying in the doorway of Hot Rod’s Downtown barber shop. Brown said he initially thought the man was curled up and asleep.

Brown said he had previously seen people downtown who appeared to be sleeping after being under the influence of a substance and did not want to bother the man.

“I hollered, ‘Hey man,’” Brown said, but the man did not move.

Brown continued on his way but later saw police at the scene after the business owner discovered the man.

“That’s too bad, that sucks,” Brown said.

Police placed a privacy barrier around the body during the investigation. The Monroe County Coroner’s Office later removed the body in a white coroner van.

The coroner advised investigators that an autopsy would be performed to help determine the cause and manner of death, according to police.

Officers began removing crime scene tape and the privacy barrier, and the scene was cleared by approximately 10:45 a.m.

The sidewalk was later washed down. A large alcohol bottle that had been at the scene was placed in a trash can by a worker cleaning in front of nearby businesses.

The man’s identity and additional information about the cause and manner of death are expected to be released by the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.
