New Jersey Doctors Identify Kidney Disorder Tied to Hard Seltzer Overconsumption

Researchers at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center have pinpointed a kidney problem. It stems from drinking too much hard seltzer. The disorder, called Mehandru/Vachharajani Syndrome, triggers dangerous hyponatremia in those who guzzle large quantities of these fizzy drinks.

According to the Monmouth Journal, the syndrome takes its name from Sushil K. Mehandru, M.D., chief of nephrology and hemodialysis at the medical center, along with his colleague Supreet Kaur, APN. They wrote a study on this affliction with researchers at Cleveland Clinic. Their work, published in the International Journal of Clinical and Medical Cases, describes patients who drank two or more six-packs per day.

Hyponatremia happens when sodium in the blood plummets to unsafe concentrations. Mild cases bring nausea and headaches. Severe ones spark confusion, seizures, or even coma.

This disorder develops when someone drinks excessive amounts of low-solute beverages like hard seltzers, which then dilute sodium concentrations in the body. Summer months amplify this danger because people sweat more and face greater dehydration. The light, fruity taste of these drinks can deceive consumers, prompting them to drink far more than they planned.

Alcohol functions as a diuretic. It makes the body expel fluid. Summer heat compounds this effect, worsening dehydration while raising heatstroke risk. Overconsumption creates danger on multiple fronts — both Mehandru/Vachharajani Syndrome and other alcohol-induced health crises.

Medical professionals are pushing for moderation as summer nears. They suggest drinking water to stay hydrated and watching how much alcohol you consume. Anyone who feels confused, weak, or has seizures after drinking should call 9-1-1 right away.

Jersey Shore University Medical Center serves Monmouth and Ocean Counties as their only Level 1 Adult Trauma Center. It also operates as New Jersey’s first Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, verified by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.
