Driver arrested after early-morning police pursuit through Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — June 10, 2026

A 20-year-old Bloomington man was arrested Wednesday morning after police said he ran several red lights and led an officer on a pursuit from downtown Bloomington to Bethel Lane.

The pursuit began around 5:47 a.m. after a Bloomington Police Department officer saw the driver of a silver Hyundai Accent briefly stop at a red light at Third and Walnut streets before proceeding through the intersection, according to police.

The officer then saw the driver run another red light at Kirkwood Avenue and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver did not stop and continued north on Walnut Street, police said.

As the officer closed the distance, the driver allegedly disregarded the red light at Seventh and Walnut streets. Police said the driver accelerated and continued through red lights at 17th Street and the State Road 45/46 Bypass at a high rate of speed, endangering other motorists.

The driver continued north on Walnut Street and then onto Old State Road 37, according to police.

The pursuing officer began preparing to perform a precision immobilization technique, commonly called a PIT maneuver, but decided to wait for backup.

The Hyundai later turned right onto Bethel Lane, where the driver stopped and put his hands outside the vehicle. Police took the driver and an 18-year-old female passenger into custody. The passenger was later released.

Police identified the driver as Trayton Montgomery, 20.

Montgomery was booked into the Monroe County Jail at 6:25 a.m. on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, a Level 5 felony, and reckless driving, a Class C misdemeanor.
