BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — June 10, 2026
A 21-year-old Bloomington man was arrested Tuesday night after police said he accidentally fired a handgun while trying to disassemble it, sending a bullet through an apartment wall and striking a neighbor.
Bloomington police were called around 9:25 p.m. Tuesday to the 2900 block of East Discovery Parkway after a 24-year-old woman reported she had been struck by a bullet that came through the wall from a neighboring apartment, according to the Bloomington Police Department.
The woman told police she heard a loud noise and immediately felt pain. She was sitting in her dining room crocheting when the bullet came through the wall and struck her left arm, leaving a red mark but not penetrating the skin, police said.
The woman initially was confused about what had happened. Her partner began investigating and found a hole in the wall around the same time the woman found a 9mm round on the floor.
Investigating officers found a hole in the dining room wall and drywall fragments on the floor from the bullet.
Police removed occupants from the apartment while they investigated whether there was an active threat. During the investigation, an officer saw a man inside another apartment placing a license plate over a hole in the wall, according to police. The officer saw the man through a glass patio door.
Before attempting to place the license plate on the wall, the man, identified by police as Kaleb Ford, had been putting pieces of tape on something, police said.
Officers ordered Ford out of the apartment, and he was detained.
Police believe Ford was attempting to disassemble a Canik 9mm pistol when it fired. The bullet traveled through the wall and struck the woman in the neighboring apartment, according to BPD.
Ford was arrested on a preliminary charge of criminal recklessness, a Level 5 felony.
