A boy who just finished the 9th grade at Calico Rock has been paralyzed while bronc riding at a rodeo in Green Forest over the weekend. Fifteen-year-old Samuel Speak is still in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Mercy Hospital in Springfield after having two vertebrae in his neck broken and another fractured when he was stepped on by a horse after being thrown during his ride Saturday night.
Dillon Kingery is Speak’s future father-in-law. He was with Speak at the rodeo and explains what happened.

Speak was taken to Mercy Hospital in Springfield. Kingery says the news they got from the doctors there was not good.

Kingery says the doctors told them after surgery Speak will probably never walk again. But, Speak did feel some tingling and numbness in his legs after the operation.
On Monday, Kingery says Speaks was intubated because his oxygen levels had dropped.

Kingery says Speak, who played basketball at Calico Rock, has been riding at rodeos about every weekend since school let out for the summer. He primarily rides broncs, but has ridden bulls twice.
