Aligned Fitness Acquires Six Club Pilates Studios, Enters New Jersey Market

Aligned Fitness Holdings scooped up six Club Pilates studios across New Jersey in two separate transactions announced June 3. The move plants the Atlanta company’s flag in the state for the first time.

The purchased sites sit in Shrewsbury, Middletown, Bridgewater, Flemington, Montgomery, and Princeton. No one revealed what changed hands financially.

Gary Laden sold off the Shrewsbury and Middletown properties. Karen and Todd Spidare had owned the remaining four before closing the deal.

This buy pushes the collection to 61 studios scattered across America. Aligned Fitness Holdings has operated for a decade and stands among the system’s largest players nationwide.

Co-founder Jon Smith weighed in after the purchase went through. “Gary, Todd, and Karen built outstanding businesses with strong teams, loyal members and excellent reputations in their communities,” Smith said, according to NJBiz. “We’re excited to welcome them into the Aligned family and continue building upon the foundation they created.”

Club Pilates started 19 years back in San Diego as a specialized fitness franchise. The brand zeroes in on Reformer-based Pilates sessions. Xponential Fitness owns what has mushroomed into the largest Pilates chain anywhere, boasting over 1,200 spots worldwide.

More than a dozen Club Pilates locations dot New Jersey. The operator teamed up with Eagle Merchant Partners to fuel its growth.

The Atlanta private equity shop pours money into health, wellness, and consumer services ventures. Principal Jake Rubenstein talked about what the acquisition means.

“These acquisitions reflect the continued strength of the boutique fitness category and the significant opportunity we see within the Club Pilates ecosystem,” Rubenstein said. “Aligned has established itself as a highly respected operator with a disciplined growth strategy, and we believe there remains substantial runway for expansion through partnerships with best-in-class franchisees.”

Smith anticipates more consolidation chances will pop up in boutique fitness. He keeps hunting for franchisees whose values and operations match what the company wants long-term.

“We believe there is significant opportunity ahead,” Smith said. “The Club Pilates brand continues to resonate with consumers, and we are actively looking for the right franchise partners who want to continue growing alongside us.”
