Raccoon Attack in Ridgewood Sparks Safety Alert Across Bergen County

Ridgewood police issued a warning after a raccoon attacked someone near Maple Field and the Community Garden on May 30 around 7 p.m. The next day brought a second report. A sick-looking raccoon crossed Meadowbrook Avenue around 2:15 p.m.

Animal Control officers jumped on the situation. Officers have been notified and stay active in the area, according to the police department’s announcement.

“Out of an abundance of caution, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant in this area and throughout the Village,” police said, according to Patch.

The department told residents not to approach, feed, or try to handle any wild animals. Aggressive animals may have rabies. This disease kills humans and other animals unless treated quickly after exposure.

Parents should keep children under close supervision when outdoors. Pet owners must keep their animals leashed and under control while outside, police said.

Residents should avoid any wildlife that appears aggressive, unusually tame, disoriented, injured, or sick. Got bitten or scratched by a wild animal? Get medical attention right away and notify the police department.

The incidents come less than a month after a beaver attacked multiple people at a park in Mahwaw on May 3, including an 8-year-old boy who was taken to the hospital. That animal was caught, euthanized, and tested positive for rabies.

A rabid raccoon was also captured earlier this month in Byram Township in Sussex County. Video of the beaver attack went viral online.

“We appreciate the public’s cooperation and encourage residents to exercise caution while Animal Control investigates the situation,” police said.

The department asked residents to report any sightings of aggressive or abnormal animal behavior to the police. Town officials will provide more information if necessary.
