A Stone County man has been arrested after hitting his live-in girlfriend and choking her. Facing seven charges for the incident, four of them felonies, is 36-year-old Shain A. Smith of Mountain View.
According to the probable cause affidavit from the Stone County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement officers from three agencies responded to a residence on Hidden Valley Road for a domestic disturbance call last week.
Deputies learned Smith had produced a knife during the incident, struck the victim in the face with his fist and choked her to the point she could not breathe.
Two juveniles were in the house at the time and received cuts and bruising when they intervened trying to help their mother.
When law enforcement arrived, Smith barricaded himself in the residence, but eventually came out and surrendered.
Smith is facing felony charges of aggravated assault on a family or household member, second degree battery and two counts of enhanced penalties for offenses committed in the presence of a child. Misdemeanor charges include third degree domestic battery, third degree battery and third degree endangering the welfare of a minor. Smith also faces a penalty enhancement for being a habitual offender. The affidavit notes he has an extensive criminal history including multiple felony charges. He is being held on $40,000 bond and a no contact order has been issued between Smith and the victim and her children.
PREVIOUS ARRESTS
Two of Smith’s previous arrests have been in Arkansas and occurred in Fulton County.
He was arrested in 2015 on drug charges and was sentenced to 36 months of probation.
In 2019, Smith was arrested on charges of residential burglary, two counts theft of a firearm, theft of property, eight counts of possession of firearms by a certain person (meaning he is a convicted felon), two counts of defacing a firearm and two counts of possession of a defaced firearm.
In January of 2020, Smith accepted a plea deal with the state, and was sentenced to 15 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections.
