High-profile demonstrations at Delaney Hall Immigrant Detention Center began in early May after advocates said detainees inside launched a hunger strike over poor living conditions at the 1,000-bed facility, the latest hotbed of opposition over the federal government’s immigration crackdown. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka actually imposed a curfew Sunday between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. around the center the after a series of intense clashes between protesters and police. The curfew was finally lifted Tuesday evening.
“After last night’s protest without a single arrest, we are lifting this curfew to allow full expression of the American right to free speech and to peacefully assemble,” Baraka said in a statement.
