New Jersey ER Wait Times Exceed National Average at 48 Facilities

Forty-eight hospitals in New Jersey clock emergency room wait times that blow past the national average of 2 hours and 42 minutes. Compare the Market ran the numbers. They examined 2,095 facilities across America with 2024 data.

Three Newark facilities ranked among the 12 Garden State locations with the longest delays. University Hospital topped the state list at 5 hours and 48 minutes. Newark Beth Israel Medical Center hit 3 hours and 31 minutes, while Saint Michael’s Medical Center came in at 3 hours and 29 minutes, according to app.

Essex County had seven facilities whose wait times surpassed the national average — the most of any county statewide.

Middlesex and Monmouth counties each had five locations that topped the national mark. Hunterdon County had no facilities on the list.

Compare the Market pulled publicly available data sourced from HospitalStats.org, which compiles information derived from CMS datasets. The research found that while no Garden State facilities approach the longest wait times in the nation — where some patients face delays of more than nine hours — nearly four dozen locations still surpass the national benchmark.

Centrastate Medical Center in Freehold had the longest wait time in Monmouth County at 3 hours and 39 minutes.

Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune followed at 3 hours and 30 minutes. Both Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch and Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank recorded waits of 3 hours and 15 minutes.

Ocean County had just two facilities that exceeded the national average. Monmouth Medical Center-Southern Campus in Lakewood had the county’s longest wait at 3 hours. Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin came in at 2 hours and 55 minutes.

Hackensack Meridian Health, Mountainside Medical in Montclair recorded the second-longest wait time statewide at 4 hours and 17 minutes. Morristown Medical Center followed at 4 hours and 8 minutes.

The analysis used performance data compiled from CMS reporting datasets. Wait times represent the period before patients receive medical attention in emergency departments.
