Kroger Recalls Croutons over Salmonella Risk

CINCINNATI, OH. (WOWO) A nationwide recall involving Kroger-brand seasoned croutons has been issued due to potential Salmonella contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The Lead Off

  • Kroger Homestyle Cheese Garlic Croutons recalled in 17 states over Salmonella risk
  • Recall involves 5-ounce pouches sold in multiple Kroger stores, including Indiana
  • No illnesses have been reported, according to the FDA

Recall details and products affected

The recall applies to select lots of Kroger Homestyle Cheese Garlic Croutons sold in 5-ounce pouches.

The affected products carry UPC code 0 11110 81353 4 and have “best if used by” dates ranging from February 17, 2027, through April 7, 2027.

The croutons were distributed between March 7 and April 7 to Kroger stores across 17 states, including Indiana.

Reason for recall

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says the recall was initiated out of an abundance of caution due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Officials said the concern is linked to powdered milk used as part of the seasoning ingredient.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness, particularly in young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Health risks and symptoms

According to the FDA, Salmonella infection can cause symptoms including:

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain

In severe cases, infection can become serious or potentially life-threatening.

Distribution and consumer guidance

The recalled products were shipped to Kroger locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.

No illnesses have been reported as of this time.

Customers who purchased the affected croutons are advised to return them to the place of purchase for a refund or contact the manufacturer, Sugar Foods LLC.

Next steps

The FDA says the recall remains active while the company and federal regulators continue monitoring distribution and consumer safety concerns.
