Dell Support assist Updates Forces Windows Systems to BSOD Loop

A faulty update to Dell’s SupportAssist Remediation service is sending thousands of Dell and Alienware laptop users into endless Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) loops, with systems crashing every 30 minutes and displaying the dreaded CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED stop error. Dell Engineering has confirmed awareness of the bug and is actively working on a fix.

The root cause has been traced to Dell SupportAssist Remediation version 5.5.16.0, a background service that operates independently of the main SupportAssist application.

Users who updated their Dell BIOS, dock firmware, or support software via Dell Command Update or SupportAssist began reporting erratic reboots almost immediately after installation.

What makes this particularly disruptive is how the service behaves silently in the background. Unlike the primary SupportAssist app, which users can easily monitor, the Remediation service runs as a standalone Windows process, making it difficult to identify as the crash source without careful event log analysis.

Affected models include the popular XPS 15 9530, with reports spreading across multiple Dell and Alienware product lines.

Community members on Dell’s official support forums began flagging the issue as early as May 12, 2026, when Dell Community Manager DELL-Daniel V confirmed that Dell Engineering was actively investigating.

“Version 5.5.16.0 of the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service or Alienware SupportAssist Remediation service can cause the BSODs,” the community post stated.

Workarounds to Fix the Issue

Dell’s official interim workaround is to manually uninstall the problematic service. Users should follow these steps:

  1. Open Windows Settings and navigate to Apps → Installed Apps
  2. Search for Dell SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.16.0 or Alienware SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.16.0
  3. Select the application and click Uninstall

Users should note that any system repair points previously created by Dell OS Recovery may become unavailable after removing the service.

However, keeping the main SupportAssist app or Dell Command Update installed will automatically download and install the stable replacement version once Dell pushes the corrected update, restoring recovery point functionality.

For users who continue experiencing BSODs even after uninstalling the service, Dell recommends contacting official support. Warranty users can reach Dell’s Get Help Now live chat support Monday through Friday for expedited case handling.

The timing of this incident is notable: the buggy service was quietly pushed alongside routine firmware updates, leaving many users without warning before their systems became unstable.

Dell has not yet disclosed how many devices were affected or provided a specific timeline for a patched release.

Security and IT administrators managing Dell device fleets should audit endpoints for SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.16.0 and prioritize its removal to prevent user disruption while awaiting Dell’s official patch.
