Fort Wayne Community Schools Unveils New Inclusive Playground at Bunche Montessori

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) — Families of children with physical and mental disabilities often face challenges when searching for safe and accessible play spaces, but a new addition at a Fort Wayne school is helping change that.

Fort Wayne Community Schools officially celebrated the opening of a new accessible, inclusive, and sensory-friendly playground Friday at Bunche Montessori, marking the completion of a community-driven effort led by the Bunche-Towles PTA and local partners.

The project, originally launched with a fundraising goal of $30,000, far exceeded expectations. Organizers say the initiative brought in more than $113,000 in donations, allowing for expanded equipment, enhanced accessibility features, and funding set aside for future improvements.

The new playground is designed to accommodate children of all abilities, offering sensory-rich equipment and adaptive play structures intended to ensure that every student can participate fully in outdoor activities. School officials and PTA members say the space reflects a growing commitment to inclusion and equal access to recreation within the district.

Community members who supported the project say the overwhelming response highlights Fort Wayne’s dedication to creating welcoming spaces for all families, particularly those with special needs.

The Bunche Montessori playground is now open for student use and will serve as a model for future inclusive recreation efforts across the district.
