Inaugural Graduation Marks Historic Milestone for Lakeland Preparatory School

Lakeland marked a defining moment in its history on Tuesday evening, May 5, as Lakeland Preparatory School held its inaugural high school graduation ceremony at Bellevue Baptist Church. For the first time, a senior class of 162 students crossed the stage, representing a school that just over a decade ago, existed only as a vision shared by a determined community.

The journey to this milestone was both intentional and at times challenging. The creation of Lakeland’s municipal school system, and the eventual addition of a high school, required years of planning, public input, and steadfast commitment from local families and leaders who believed educating students within their own city was not just important, it was critical to the longevity of the city. Despite years of opposition from some locals who did not want Lakeland schools, the vision ultimately came to life, culminating in a complete K–12 system now fully realized through this graduating class.

Many members of the inaugural class began their time at Lakeland Prep when the high school was still in its early stages, with limited upperclassmen and few established traditions. In many ways, they helped build those traditions from the ground up. Their impact extended far beyond participation, they helped shape the culture, expectations, and identity of the school, leaving a lasting influence for the classes that will follow.

The accomplishments of the Class of 2026 reflect both excellence and determination. Lakeland Prep’s baseball team secured a state championship last year, while numerous other student-athletes competed at the TSSAA state level. The school’s theatre program also earned regional recognition, with its production of Anything Goes receiving 20 nominations from the Orpheum High School Musical Theatre Awards. In the classroom, the class set a strong academic standard, earning more than $15 million in college scholarship offers.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see Lakeland Prep celebrate its first graduating class,” said Kevin Floyd, an original board member and chair of the first Lakeland school board. “This milestone reflects not just the success of the students, but the perseverance, vision, and unwavering support of the entire Lakeland community. It’s a proud moment that speaks to what can be accomplished when a community comes together with a shared purpose.”

Matt Wright, also an original school board member, shared a similar reflection, “The early years were challenging and demanded a great deal of dedication, but the outcome made it all worthwhile. I was happy to see the graduates and their families celebrate this moment together.”

Lakeland Mayor Josh Roman also reflected on the significance of the evening, telling Lakeland Currents, “Last night was a win for our entire community. As the choir selection so beautifully expressed, our city has been changed for the better. Thank you to the Class of 2026 and to everyone who helped make this possible.”

This inaugural graduation represents far more than a ceremonial milestone. It stands as the first full realization of a community-driven vision, one rooted in perseverance, pride, and a shared commitment to the future, laying a strong foundation for generations of Lakeland students to come.
