The Lehrer Report: April 23, 2026

Garden report: the dandelions are blooming in the lawn. The pulmanari have bloomed. Hosta and autumn sedum shoots are up. The flowering apple, cherry and magnolia trees in bloom around town have been lovely to see.

Amherst Arts Night Out is back. It will be held Thursday, April 23 from 5-8 p.m. at 15 businesses downtown. Free parking is available that night. For a schedule visit www.downtownamherst.org.

The Amherst Woman’s Club, of which I am a member, will hold its Flower Show, Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Club House on Triangle Street. Flowers and floral items will be sold. The event includes a silent auction, raffle and herbal medicine talk at 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Admission.

Historic Northampton and the Forbes Library are sponsoring a lecture, “Connecticut River Oxbow “ by Jonathan Moldover, Saturday, April 25 at 4 p.m. at the library. The program is free and open to the public.

The David Ruggles Center will hold its  Founder’s Day program Sunday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m. at the Bombyx Center with speakers, according to an email from Kim Gerold, center board member. It’s free and open to the public.

The annual Daffodil Run to benefit the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampshire County will be held Sunday, April 26 beginning at 9:30 a.m. on the Amherst Town Common. There are 5K and 10K walk and run options. Register online. It’s fortunate that many daffodils are still in bloom.

The Seniors Sip was so popular it is being held again, according to an email from Jeanne Horrigan, head of the Amherst Council on Aging. The event will be held Thursday, April 30 from 4-6 at the Oyster Bar. Snacks will be provided. You pay for the beverages.
