NSA Confirms Use of Anthropic’s Mythos Despite Pentagon Blacklist
The development highlights growing tensions between national security priorities and internal policy restrictions within the U.S. defense ecosystem.
According to intelligence insights cited by the International Cyber Digest, the NSA is among a limited group of around 40 organizations worldwide granted access to the highly controlled Mythos Preview.
The model is considered one of the most advanced AI systems for cybersecurity and offensive operations.
Anthropic has tightly restricted Mythos due to its powerful technical capabilities.
Unlike conventional AI models, Mythos is designed to operate in complex digital environments and identify security weaknesses with high precision.
Key capabilities include:
These features make Mythos particularly valuable for intelligence agencies like the NSA, which require advanced tools for both defensive and offensive cyber missions.
The NSA’s use of Mythos comes despite Anthropic being officially labeled a “supply chain risk” by the Pentagon.
The designation followed a breakdown in negotiations between Anthropic and the DoD over access to its AI technologies.
Anthropic reportedly declined to provide unrestricted access to its flagship Claude models, citing internal safety policies and concerns about potential misuse, including mass surveillance applications.
As a result, the Pentagon terminated contracts with the company and imposed a department-wide blacklist.
However, the NSA appears to have pursued a separate path. Faced with increasing cyber threats and the need for advanced vulnerability detection tools, the agency has reportedly secured independent access to Mythos, effectively bypassing the broader DoD restrictions.
The situation underscores a growing divide within U.S. defense agencies. While the Pentagon enforces strict supply chain controls, operational agencies like the NSA are prioritizing access to cutting-edge technologies.
Recent reports also include high-level discussions between Anthropic leadership and U.S. officials.
These talks suggest efforts to establish a controlled framework that would allow the selective use of powerful AI systems like Mythos while maintaining safety and ethical boundaries.
Such arrangements could shape how governments collaborate with private AI companies in the future, particularly in areas involving offensive cyber capabilities and national security.
As cyber threats continue to evolve, the balance between innovation, control, and ethics is becoming increasingly complex, placing AI tools like Mythos at the center of that debate.
