LAKE COUNTY, Ind. — April 14, 2026
A 21-year-old Hammond man was seriously injured Friday after allegedly fleeing from an Indiana State Police trooper at speeds topping 130 mph before crashing into a pickup truck on Interstate 80 in Lake County, police said.
According to Indiana State Police, the incident began at about 5:55 p.m. April 10 when a trooper observed a sport motorcycle traveling 95 mph in a posted 55 mph construction zone on eastbound I-80 near the 8.7 mile marker, close to the Grant Street exit.
Police said the trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the motorcyclist accelerated to speeds estimated at more than 130 mph, made multiple unsafe lane changes and endangered several motorists.
Because of heavy traffic ahead, the trooper ended the pursuit about 10 seconds after it began, state police said.
A short time later, ISP dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting a motorcycle crash near the 13 mile marker, close to Central Avenue. The trooper arrived and found the same motorcycle and driver involved in the earlier attempted stop, police said.
State police identified the motorcyclist as Agustin Flores, 21, of Hammond. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital before later being transferred out of state for additional treatment.
Witnesses told police the motorcycle was traveling at extremely high speeds and weaving through traffic just before it struck the rear of a white Ford F-150, ejecting Flores from the motorcycle.
The driver of the pickup, identified as Adalberto Velasco, 43, of Elkhart, was not injured, police said. Investigators later found that Velasco had never been issued a driver’s license and arrested him on a charge of operator never licensed.
Police also said the motorcycle displayed an expired temporary Indiana license plate that did not return to any registration. The motorcycle’s VIN could not immediately be verified and will require follow-up examination by a VIN specialist.
Indiana State Police said the following charges have been submitted to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office for review against Flores: resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, a Level 6 felony; criminal recklessness, a Class A misdemeanor; and reckless driving causing property damage, a Class B misdemeanor.
All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
