Valladares’ bill to crack down on illegal dumping passes Senate Public Safety Committee

News release

Sen. Suzette Martinez Valladares, R-Acton, announced that her bill to crack down on illegal dumping advanced out of the Senate Public Safety Committee with unanimous bipartisan support.

“I’m grateful to my colleagues in the Senate Public Safety Committee for advancing this important legislation,” Valladares said in a news release. “Illegal dumping harms our environment, threatens public health and drains local resources. It’s time to empower local leaders to hold offenders accountable and keep neighborhoods clean.”

Senate Bill 1230 would update outdated fine structures that have not kept pace with the true cost of cleanup and environmental damage, the release said. It also designates the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) as the state’s lead resource hub, providing cities and counties with centralized access to enforcement tools, funding opportunities and best practices.

“Illegal dumping has been an ongoing problem in my community and in communities statewide for far too long, and it’s time we hold these offenders accountable,” Valladares added. “I’m hopeful this bill will continue to receive bipartisan support and before too long, will be signed into law.”

SB 1230 is part of Valladares’ public safety legislative package and next moves on to the Senate Environmental Quality Committee for consideration.
