Fire destroys home and cars in Canterbury

A garage fire engulfed a two-story home on 188 Southwest Rd. in Canterbury Tuesday afternoon. Smoke billowed out from the two garage doors, then completely incinerated, as firefighters attempted to quell flames throughout the house.

Canterbury Fire Chief Michael Gamache was the first on the scene after receiving a call around 1:17 p.m. He said the fire had been burning for a while, that around half of the home had been damaged by the fire and both cars in the garage were a loss.

Two people self-evacuated and were taken to the police station, according to Gamache.

“It’s currently under investigation. The residents mentioned something about a car that wasn’t running right, so we’re going to be looking into that,” Chief Gamache said.

The exterior walls on either side of the house also showed extensive damage, with a sunroom and porch on the north side appearing completely blackened after the fire was extinguished. The flames spread further into the back areas of the home and into the upper level, as well.

Fire engines from Bow, Concord, Canterbury and Tilton-Northfield were all present on the scene to aid in the efforts to put out the fire.
