Update: Northfield woman armed with knife fatally shot by police after attacking another woman with fire extinguisher
A 27-year-old woman died early Monday morning after police responding to a domestic disturbance call shot her inside a Northfield apartment following a confrontation in which she was armed with a knife, authorities said.
At approximately 12:12 a.m., a 911 caller reported that an adult female resident was striking the caller’s girlfriend with a fire extinguisher.
The caller identified the woman as Megan Whiting, stating that she was smashing objects, breaking a window, and urging police to respond quickly, according to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s office.
Dispatchers also reported hearing yelling in the background during the call.
When Northfield and Tilton police officers entered the doorway of the apartment on 20 Vine Street, they observed Whiting armed with a knife and standing near an injured female resident.
Authorities said police repeatedly ordered Whiting to drop her knife after arriving at the scene six minutes following the 911 call. One officer fired at Whiting, who died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide.
Police were able to safely remove the injured resident from the apartment and secure the knife, the Attorney General’s Office in a statement.
No officers were reported injured in the incident.
The Attorney General has launched an investigation, as it does for all police-involved shootings. The officers involved have not been publicly identified. Authorities noted that one of the initial responding officers was equipped with a body camera.
