Photos from the Daredevil: Born Again set have confirmed the upcoming return of several fan-favorite characters.

While Daredevil: Born Again has just started airing its second season of episodes on Disney+, production is already underway on its third season — which will seemingly reunite all of Marvel’s Netflix-era Defenders.

Set photos taken while filming on location in Brooklyn last week have revealed the return of both Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Finn Jones as Danny Rand, AKA Iron Fist. Jessica Jones actress Krysten Ritter was also spotted, confirming she’ll be back again next season after previously being confirmed to return for upcoming episodes.

With the above trio set to appear alongside Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Marvel is planning a reunion that many fans thought would never happen: the full return of The Defenders, the mini-Avengers-style line-up of street level heroes from the Netflix era.

Back in 2017, Netflix’s The Defenders miniseries brought together characters and plotlines from each of the streamer’s main four superhero shows. Just a couple of years later, however, Netflix had walked away from its partnership with Marvel, and it took years for Cox to return in his fan-favorite role, with doubt cast over whether his fellow superhero teammates would ever do the same.

But fans have kept up the hope, especially when it was confirmed that Ritter would be back as Jessica Jones for Daredevil: Born Again’s second season. Recent months have seen Colter suggest he was now considering a return, too.

So, what’s the story going to be? We know that Daredevil: Born Again’s second season will show the climax of the series’ Mayor Fisk arc, with next year’s episodes showing something of the aftermath. Indeed, these photos also show Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page meeting Zabryna Guevara’s Sheila Rivera, who appears to have survived Fisk’s reign and may now be mayor herself. (Guevara also got a split-second cameo in Marvel’s recent Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer, suggesting as much.)

Speaking of trailers, Marvel has officially released a mid-season look at Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, in which Ritter’s Jessica Jones confirms for the first time that she has a child. Who’s the father? Our money’s on Luke Cage — which would make for a handy reason why he’s absent for season two, if he’s back at home on daddy duty.

The release of that trailer and the happy conincidence of a professional photographer happening to catch the Defenders’ return on camera all suggests Marvel has big plans for Daredevil’s future, and a keen eye on sating fans’ hopes for the series after something of a rocky start. “It’s a good show that offers a more focused story than Season 1, as Daredevil and his allies attempt to push back against Mayor Fisk’s reign of terror,” IGN wrote in our spoiler-free Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 review.
