Three companies with sites in Newark will eliminate 357 jobs before summer arrives. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notices showed up on the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development website.

According to Patch, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey will dismiss 242 workers on April 26. Luna Foods, which runs Joey’s Fine Foods, will cut 61 positions June 5. Prudential Financial will shed 54 jobs sometime after May 7 but before June 7.

WARN notices make employers give 60 days’ warning before plant closings and mass layoffs happen. The federal law shields workers, their families, and communities by allowing time to brace for job losses.

The insurance company accounts for most of the planned cuts. Which departments or positions will get hit remains unknown.

The food distributor represents the second-largest batch of planned job eliminations. Those reductions kick in more than two months out.

The financial services firm’s layoffs will happen across a month-long stretch starting in May. The staggered timeline might hit different divisions or locations.

More information may surface as the dates draw near. Companies tend to give affected employees details before making public announcements.

The state database keeps tabs on all WARN notices filed in New Jersey. Employers must submit these documents when planning large-scale workforce reductions.

Workers caught in the layoffs will get the required advance warning. That 60-day window gives time to hunt for new jobs or tap into retraining programs.
