BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — April 1, 2026

Novo Nordisk confirmed Tuesday that approximately 400 positions will be cut at its Bloomington site, while city officials said they are working with local partners to help affected workers find support and new job opportunities.

In a statement provided to The Bloomingtonian, a Novo Nordisk spokesperson said the company will continue to employ about 1,400 people at Site Bloomington after the workforce reduction takes effect in early May.

“Novo Nordisk remains committed to Site Bloomington, where we will continue to employ approximately 1,400 people following a workforce reduction of approximately 400 positions at the beginning of May,” the company said in the statement.

The company said it continues to view Bloomington as a key part of its U.S. manufacturing network and said it plans to keep investing in the site.

“Despite this difficult decision, Novo Nordisk continues to invest in Site Bloomington as a critical part of our U.S. manufacturing network and our commitment to the people who depend on our medicines,” the statement said.

Novo Nordisk also said workers affected by the layoffs will be offered severance, outplacement assistance and transition support.

“We are deeply grateful to every impacted colleague and are committed to treating them with respect and dignity through this process,” the company said.

The City of Bloomington issued its own statement Tuesday saying officials are aware of the workforce reduction and the effect it will have on workers and families in the community.

According to the city, Novo Nordisk Site Head Lars Arnoldsen contacted Mayor Kerry Thomson directly to share the news and discuss the local impact.

“Our focus is on the individuals affected,” Thomson said in the city’s statement. “We know this is a difficult moment for many and we are committed to helping ensure that those impacted have clear pathways forward.”

The city said it appreciates that transition resources are being made available to employees and will work with the Bloomington Economic Development Corporation and other local partners to connect laid-off workers with employment opportunities, support services and other available resources.

Novo Nordisk’s Bloomington facility, formerly operated by Catalent, is a major pharmaceutical manufacturing site and one of the area’s larger employers.
