‘If I Could Know, I Would Want to Know’ — Steven Spielberg Says His Big Question About Aliens ‘Has Resolved Itself to My Satisfaction’ in Disclosure Day

Steven Spielberg has started to peel back the curtain on his upcoming sci-fi blockbuster, Disclosure Day, which he says is inspired by the question of whether aliens are here with us on Earth.

The legendary Hollywood director, who has form when it comes to making movies about aliens, told Empire magazine that making Disclosure Day has helped him resolve that very question.

“If I could know, I would want to know,” Spielberg said. “Who would not want to know?”

“There are also great questions on what kind of social and theological disruption would occur if such an event was disclosed beyond anyone’s reasonable doubts,” he continued.

Spielberg is behind the likes of alien movie masterpieces, such as 1977’s Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, 1982’s E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, and 2005’s War of the Worlds.

“I have seven solid decades of a vast personal interest in what lies beyond our atmosphere, in the cosmos, and what is within our atmosphere right here on planet Earth,” he said. “The question has always remained for me: are we alone on our own planet? I cannot imagine that we are alone out there. That question has not only haunted me, but it has inspired me. But, I think, it has now resolved itself to my satisfaction in Disclosure Day.”

Disclosure Day stars Oppenheimer and A Quiet Place’s Emily Blunt as well as Josh O’Connor (Challengers, The Crown), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, Kingsman franchise), Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters, The Perfect Couple), and Colman Domingo (Sing Sing, Rustin). The film revolves around what at face value looks like the hidden truth that aliens are among us. In the recently released trailer, Colin Firth’s character appears hell bent on keeping the truth a secret for fear of upending the world order, and can be seen appearing in a house and having a conversation with someone remotely, via some sort of advanced technology device hooked up to his mind. Even his eyes have changed color.

Emily Blunt’s character, meanwhile, does a creepy ticking noise while attempting to read the weather report, as we saw in the debut trailer. She is caught up in the attempt to reveal the truth to the world — Disclosure Day itself. Josh O’Connor’s character, who is at the heart of the attempt to reveal the truth, says he can understand Blunt’s weird ticking noises, but no-one else seems to be able to.

There are fantastical elements — what may well be a return to childhood for Blunt’s character — and clear thriller elements, too, with Blunt and O’Connor attempting to escape an attempt on their lives. “When the time is right, everything will become clear,” we’re told. At the end of the trailer we get a glimpse of what looks like an alien spaceship emerging from the clouds.

The tagline is:

If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people.

We are coming close to … Disclosure Day.

Disclosure Day hits theaters on June 12, 2026.
