Staff report
Bloomington, Ind. — March 30, 2026
Novo Nordisk is preparing to lay off more than 400 employees at its Bloomington facility, according to information obtained by The Bloomingtonian from a source who requested anonymity and employee discussions that surfaced publicly online.
The cuts are expected to affect roughly 22% of the workforce at the Bloomington site, formerly operated by Catalent. Novo Nordisk did not provide The Bloomingtonian with the statement it distributed to other local media outlets before publication.
Discussion of the layoffs spread publicly on Reddit as workers and former workers shared accounts that broadly matched the information obtained by The Bloomingtonian. In a thread on the Bloomington subreddit, multiple commenters said about 400 jobs were being cut and described the reduction as affecting roughly 22% of the site. Some commenters also said employees were told notifications to affected workers would come later. Those claims could not all be independently verified, but they were consistent with the information received by The Bloomingtonian.
The reported layoffs come after years of instability at the Bloomington plant, one of the area’s largest life sciences employers. In December 2024, the Indiana Daily Student reported the facility employed more than 2,400 workers, citing an undated letter from the site’s general manager. That report also described repeated layoffs, declining morale and ongoing fallout from FDA scrutiny of operations at the plant.
According to information obtained by The Bloomingtonian, the layoffs are tied in part to ongoing business pressures facing the site. The full scope of the cuts, including which departments will be most affected and what severance or transition support may be offered, remains unclear.
Online discussion among employees reflected confusion and anxiety about how the layoffs would be handled. Some commenters said workers had received conflicting information about whether the site would remain open on the day notifications are made and which parts of the operation would be hit hardest.
The Bloomingtonian will update this story if the company issues a statement or additional documentation becomes available.
