The Community FoodBank of New Jersey wants people in Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland counties to set non-perishable food by their mailboxes on Saturday, May 9. That’s when mail carriers will gather donations for the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

Now in its 33rd year, this drive stands as the nation’s largest single-day food collection. All donations picked up in these three South Jersey counties will go straight to the FoodBank’s efforts to feed hungry people.

Food insecurity affects nearly 1.1 million people across New Jersey. More than 70,000 of them live in South Jersey. Last year, the drive hauled in almost 140,000 pounds of food for CFBNJ — enough to give over 116,000 neighbors a full day of meals.

“The prices of necessities have skyrocketed, and so has the need for food assistance. Public support for food drives like Stamp Out Hunger is more critical than ever before,” said Elizabeth McCarthy, President & CEO of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, according to Patch. “We appreciate the National Association of Letter Carriers, the participating post offices, the hardworking letter carriers who make the drive possible, and everyone who donates food to help put meals on our neighbors’ tables.”

CFBNJ gets food to people through more than 800 partners across local communities. These partners include food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, mobile pantries, and programs serving children and seniors. Last year alone, the FoodBank sent out enough food for over 90 million meals.

The most-needed items:

  • Canned fish and meat, like tuna, chicken, and ham
  • Shelf-stable milk
  • Boxed meals — pasta, cereal, rice, potatoes
  • Canned and packaged meals such as mac and cheese, chili, and soups
  • Peanut butter
  • Canned fruits and vegetables

People living outside Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland counties can check NALC.org and type in their ZIP codes to see if their local post offices are taking part.
