After Lying About No Way Home, Andrew Garfield Admits He’ll Be Answering Questions About Returning as Spider-Man ‘For the Rest of My Life’

After previously misleading fans over his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield has accepted that he’ll likely be answering questions over another possible return as Peter Parker for the rest of his life.

Garfield donned Spidey’s spandex once more for Marvel’s fan-favorite 2021 film, after appearing in two Amazing Spider-Man movies of his own. Ahead of time, however, his return was kept a closely-guarded secret — and something Garfield intentionally lied about in interviews.

Unfortunately, this tactic has now somewhat backfired — with Garfield forced to state that he is not returning for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday and that he really isn’t lying this time around. (Rumors suggest Garfield is actually telling the truth here, despite fan hopes to the contrary.)

Last year, as numerous other Marvel stars past and present gathered in the UK to film Avengers: Doomsday, Garfield was asked repeatedly whether he’d be back as Spidey in the movie. His response to the question seemed pretty definitive: “No, unequivocally f***ing no.”

Indeed, Garfield has said he’s accepted that he’ll be asked about returning as Spider-Man yet again likely “for the rest of my life” no matter the circumstances — even in decades to come, when he’s “90.”

“I think it’s a question that’s probably going to follow me for the rest of my life, ‘Are you secretly in the new Spider-Man film?'” Garfield said during an appearance on Heart radio. “Until I’m 90 years old, they’re going to be asking me, ‘Are you in the new Spider-Man Volume 512? I’ll be like, ‘I’m literally weeing into a colostomy bag, and I don’t have any…’

“But also,” Garfield concluded, “people can ask me whatever they want; my life is very blessed.”

So, will Garfield ever actually return as Peter Parker once again? If he was going to, 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars feels like the right moment, as it is the conclusion to the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. The movie’s climactic events could even provide Garfield a good place to make clear that, this time, it really is the end.

“See, what it is, is this a tell? Or what is it? You’ll find out!” Garfield previously told MTV when asked about his Secret Wars involvement. “Whatever response I’m having, is it exasperation? Is it? I don’t know. You’ll find out.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day launches in theaters on July 31, while Avengers: Doomsday will follow on December 18. Avengers: Secret Wars (and potentially also Garfield) will then arrive a year later, on December 17, 2027.
