Four-vehicle crash closes northbound I-69 between Bloomington and Martinsville Thursday evening

Martinsville, Ind. – March 27, 2026

A four-vehicle crash shut down northbound Interstate 69 between Bloomington and Martinsville for more than two hours Thursday evening, backing up traffic for miles and sending one person to an Indianapolis hospital.

According to Indiana State Police Sgt. Kevin Getz, the crash happened near the 134 mile marker. Northbound I-69 was closed beginning at 4:45 p.m. as emergency crews responded to the scene.

Getz said one of the vehicles involved was overturned, and one person was transported to Methodist Hospital.

Traffic began moving again around 6:45 p.m., when the right lane reopened, according to Getz. The interstate was fully reopened at 7:03 p.m. after all vehicles were removed from the scene.

Motorists caught in the backup described long delays and a complete standstill. Some readers reported traffic was backed up for nearly six miles, while others said it took more than an hour to move a single mile.

“We are at a complete standstill,” one reader wrote during the closure.

Another reader said, “Taken me 1 hour 15 minutes to go one mile.”

Some drivers turned to alternate routes to avoid the backup. One reader suggested taking State Road 67 through Paragon into Martinsville, while another said both northbound lanes were closed and no traffic was getting through at the height of the incident.

Other motorists who saw the scene from the southbound side described a heavy emergency response, with several first responder vehicles on both the highway and in the median. One reader said the crash “looked really bad.”

The cause of the crash was not immediately released.
