Sioux Falls Regional Airport should escape TSA delays

March 23, 2026

The hourslong lines at security checkpoints at major U.S. airports should be avoided in Sioux Falls.

The Sioux Falls Regional Airport uses a private screening partnership to provide contracted, private screeners at the passenger and luggage screening areas instead of federal TSA employees.

“This program is funded for the year, so our screeners continue to receive pay,” airport executive director Dan Letellier said. “So no delays leaving FSD, but you surely could have trouble on the return.”

The funding does not apply to TSA management and inspectors based in Sioux Falls.

There have been delays at other airports sending flights to Sioux Falls. Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport issued a ground stop over the weekend because of staffing issues, with hourslong lines at security, especially with the surge of spring break travel.

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and Denver International Airport so far have reported shorter lines, while Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport reported longer delays.

President Trump said over the weekend that he would order Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to begin staffing security at airports starting today unless Congress approves an agreement for funding TSA airport security officers.
