The emergency patch, released on March 21, 2026, targets a bug that falsely reports “no Internet” errors when users attempt to sign in to Microsoft services even on fully connected devices.
Following the installation of KB5079473, released on March 10, 2026, a subset of Windows 11 users began experiencing unexpected failures when signing into Microsoft account-dependent applications.
Despite having a functional internet connection, the system displayed a “no Internet” error that blocked access to widely used services, including Microsoft Teams Free, OneDrive, Microsoft Edge, and Copilot.
Importantly, the issue is scoped exclusively to personal Microsoft accounts. Enterprise environments relying on Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) for app authentication remain unaffected, narrowing the impact primarily to home users and small business environments using consumer Microsoft accounts.
What KB5085516 Fixes
The KB5085516 OOB update is cumulative, meaning it incorporates all quality improvements from the March 10 Patch Tuesday release (KB5079473) alongside the specific fix for the Microsoft account sign-in bug. Microsoft confirmed in its release notes that this patch directly resolves the erroneous “no Internet” detection that was interrupting authentication flows across multiple Microsoft applications.
Additionally, this release updates several AI components bundled with Windows 11, including Image Search, Content Extraction, and Semantic Analysis, all updated to version 1.2602.1451.0. The update also includes servicing stack update KB5083532 (build 26100.8035), which improves the reliability of the Windows update installation infrastructure itself.
Microsoft is pushing KB5085516 automatically through Windows Update to devices that already have KB5079473 installed. Users who have enabled the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” toggle will receive the patch without any manual intervention. Those with this setting disabled can navigate to Settings > Windows Update and select Download & install to apply it manually.
The update is also available for direct download through the Microsoft Update Catalog for environments requiring offline deployment. IT administrators managing fleets through Microsoft Intune or Windows Autopatch can deploy the update using the expedited quality update workflows available in both platforms.
Microsoft has stated that no known issues are associated with KB5085516 at the time of release.
Out-of-band updates are relatively uncommon and typically signal that the underlying bug is severe enough to warrant immediate remediation outside the standard monthly patch cycle.
Given that the affected services, OneDrive, Teams, Edge, and Copilot, are central to daily productivity workflows for millions of users, Microsoft’s swift turnaround within roughly 11 days of the original patch underscores the urgency of the issue. Users are strongly encouraged to apply KB5085516 as soon as possible to restore normal Microsoft account functionality.
