Disney has revealed the official trailer for its live-action reimagining of Moana, and it features our first look at Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s Maui (and his tattoos!), Tamatoa, Te Kā, and much more.
Moana will be released in theaters on July 10, 2026, and it appears to be a pretty faithful adaptation of the 2016 classic, as we see a ton of scenes that appeared in the original, including Maui half-transformed as a shark, Moana dancing with her Gramma Tala, the battle against Te Kā, hilarious and adorable moments with Pua and Hei Hei.
While Johnson is reprising his role as Maui, Catherine Laga’aia is replacing Auli’i Cravalho as Moana, who “answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.”
Speaking of Cravalho, she is part of this project as an executive producer alongside director Thomas Kail, Scott Sheldon, and Charles Newirth. Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda are all producers.
Miranda is also back with original songs for the film, and he is joined by Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina. Mancina is also responsible for the original score.
