Microsoft Emergency Out-of-Band Update for Windows 11 to Fix Microsoft Account Sign-In Failure

Microsoft has issued an out-of-band (OOB) update for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2, identified as KB5085516, addressing a critical sign-in bug introduced by the March 2026 Patch Tuesday release.

The update carries OS builds 26200.8039 and 26100.8039 and was made available on March 21, 2026, outside the regular monthly update cadence.

The primary driver behind this emergency release is a sign-in failure affecting users who installed the cumulative update KB5079473, released on March 10, 2026. Following that update, a subset of Windows 11 users found themselves unable to authenticate into applications using their Microsoft accounts.

Despite having an active and functioning internet connection, the system incorrectly displayed a “no Internet” error during the sign-in process, effectively blocking access to Microsoft services and applications, including Microsoft Teams Free and OneDrive.

Microsoft clarified that the issue is isolated to Microsoft account-based authentication only. Organizations that rely on Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) for app authentication are not affected by this regression.

However, the bug poses a significant disruption for consumer users and small businesses that depend on personal Microsoft accounts for daily productivity tools and cloud storage services.

Emergency Update for Windows 11

KB5085516 is a cumulative update, meaning it includes all fixes and improvements from prior security and non-security releases, in addition to the targeted sign-in fix.

The update also ships refreshed AI components as part of Microsoft’s ongoing integration of AI capabilities into Windows 11. The updated components include Image Search, Content Extraction, and Semantic Analysis, each advancing to version 1.2602.1451.0.

These AI components underpin intelligent search, on-device content analysis, and semantic understanding features within Windows 11, reflecting Microsoft’s continuous push to embed AI-driven functionality into the core operating system experience.

Alongside the LCU, Microsoft has bundled a servicing stack update (SSU) for Windows 11 version 24H2, identified as KB5083532 (build 26100.8035).

The servicing stack is the foundational component responsible for receiving and installing Windows updates. Keeping the SSU current ensures devices maintain a stable and reliable update pipeline, which is particularly critical during the deployment of out-of-band releases like this one.

The update is being pushed automatically via Windows Update to devices that have already installed KB5079473. Users with the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” setting enabled will receive KB5085516 without manual intervention. Those with the setting disabled can navigate to Settings > Windows Update and select Download & install to apply the fix manually.

For enterprise environments, IT administrators managing fleets through Microsoft Intune or Windows Autopatch should use the expedited update workflows specific to those platforms.

Microsoft has published dedicated guidance for both via the Intune expedited updates feature and the Windows Autopatch expedited quality update deployment process to ensure rapid rollout without disrupting standard maintenance windows.

Microsoft reports no known issues with KB5085516 at the time of publication.
