Fans are convinced that the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer has been edited to digitally remove several hidden characters from a specific scene — something Marvel has done in trailers several times before.

The scene in question comes right at the end of the trailer, as Spider-Man dramatically propels himself towards a crowd of ninjas. It’s a great shot, though fans think it is the latest example of a Marvel trailer not showing the full picture.

Take a look at the direction all of the ninjas are leaping, and it appears that some seem to be headed towards other, unseen targets rather than Spidey himself, in what may be the latest example of Marvel providing a separate, altered version of a shot to hide plot spoilers. Who else could be in the final version, that could be considered a spoiler? Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk is the obvious choice (remember that the trailer shows a very normal-looking Bruce Banner, with his Smart Hulk alter ego apparently gone). Or could it be Sadie Sink’s mysterious character, now working alongside Spidey?

Fans are suspicious, not least because Marvel deliberately edited a specific scene in the trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, in order to hide Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. That shot also featured enemies charging towards empty space (where Garfield and Maguire appear in the final movie) as Marvel decided to keep both actors’ involvement a secret before release.

Other examples of sneaky Marvel trailer edits include an infamous shot in the Avengers: Infinity War trailer that features the Hulk striding into battle (something that never occurs in the movie) and tweaks to remove the Infinity Stones from Thanos’ gauntlet, in order to hide how powerful the villain had become.

Various changes were also made to the appearance of characters in Avengers: Endgame trailers (for example showing Captain America with an unbroken shield, to hide the fact it gets damaged). Thunderbolts*/New Avengers trailers were also edited to insert more of a specific character, to hide their early demise in the final film.

On top of all that, there’s speculation that Marvel is also hiding Peter’s ultimate transformation — hinted at in the trailer when we see his eyes go black, following his emergence from a webbed cocoon. Rumors have suggested that Brand New Day will feature Tom Holland’s Spidey becoming Man-Spider, the six-armed mutant, and you can see one fan’s edit of how that might look in the image above.

As it is, the trailer suggests Peter will struggle to keep control of his powers — something many fans believe will see him ultimately lose control and become the powerful Man-Spider, before he’s helped out and reverts back to normal Spider-Man. Who could help him? Well, perhaps a fellow mutant… and Sadie Sink’s character ultimately turning out to be the MCU’s Jean Grey now seems the most likely possibility.

Whatever’s the case, one things for certain: interest in Spider-Man: Brand New Day is enormous, and its trailer has now been declared the most successful in history, after it beat the 24-hour viewing record previously held by Grand Theft Auto 6, notching up a staggering 718.6 million views in its first day.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has a release date of July 31, 2026. For more, you can read up on who we think Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is playing and more of our biggest post-trailer questions. You can also check out the latest on Sony’s plans to breathe life into its side of the Spider-Verse.
