Kirsten Dunst Cast as Alex in A Minecraft Movie 2, Fulfilling Her Wish to Play a Part in the Sequel

Spider-Man and Civil War star Kirsten Dunst is reportedly joining A Minecraft Movie 2 to play Alex after teasing her interest in a sequel last year.

Deadline reports that she has now signed on with Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures to play a part in the video game-turned-movie sequel. Plot details and an official title for the Minecraft movie follow-up are also being kept under wraps as it builds toward a July 23, 2027, release date.

It makes sense to see Dunst, who is also known for her roles in Jumanji in the ‘90s and last year’s Roofman, picking up her tools for A Minecraft Movie 2 to play Alex. Although the other sandbox video game icon was absent for the major events of the 2025 Minecraft film, she did appear for a brief, off-screen post-credits cameo.

Some fans began to hope that Dunst would play Alex in a sequel after she expressed her interest in a sequel during an interview with Town & Country in August. At the time, she said she would like to play some part in a Minecraft sequel, partially because her kids enjoyed in the first film – but the extra cash wouldn’t hurt, either.

“Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?” Dunst said during the interview.

Original director Jared Hess is said to be back for the second Minecraft movie, with Chris Galletta back to pen its script, too. Jack Black is also said to be returning as Steve, with Jason Momoa (Garrett), Danielle Brooks (Dawn), Matt Berry (Nitwit), and Jennifer Coolidge (Marlene) all said to be back on board, too.

Warner Bros. announced it was heading back to the Crafting Table for A Minecraft Movie 2 in October 2025. Confirmation the gaming phenomenon would return for another story was all but surprising after the first film managed to pull in more than $960 million globally after it premiered last April (according to Box Office Mojo). The film just barely missed that $1 billion milestone despite the Block Party Edition bringing fans back to theaters for a sing-along re-release in May, but a sequel still seemed to be a no-brainer.

A Minecraft Movie 2 still has more than a year to go before it digs into theaters. If it’s anything like the first film, fans should expect chaos if they want to see the film as soon as it premieres. While we wait for more news, be sure to check out our A Minecraft Movie review.
