Alabama Public Television (APT) has modernized its coverage of the Alabama legislature by building a newsroom workflow using Octopus Newsroom. For more than seven decades, APT, operated by the Alabama Educational Television Commission, has served audiences statewide through nine linked PBS member stations.

Since 1953, APT has provided comprehensive coverage of issues impacting communities across Alabama, with a strong focus on state government and the legislature. Octopus Newsroom enables APT’s team to focus on storytelling rather than tools — a vital advantage in public broadcasting, where efficient use of resources is essential.

Octopus Newsroom was chosen to help APT manage its growing production workload while remaining adaptable for future expansion. The solution offers flexible newsroom workflows, custom workflows tailored to APT’s Montgomery production studio, and readiness to scale alongside APT’s planned new studio in 2026. It also delivers role flexibility for staff, allowing journalists to transition seamlessly between producing, directing, editing and reporting, as well as faster and more efficient content creation.

Wayne Reid, APT executive director, said: “Working with the Octopus team has been a terrific experience. Starting without a platform, they listened carefully, guided us through the process and made implementation simple. Their team was professional, responsive and great to work with from start to finish.”

Octopus Newsroom is a provider of newsroom computer systems, used by more than 400 broadcasters and media organizations worldwide.
