Scammers are constantly finding new ways to target users across social media platforms, and Meta is committed to staying one step ahead.

In response to the growing sophistication of online scams, Meta has introduced a suite of advanced tools to protect users across WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger from fraud.

These tools leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and behavioral signals to detect and prevent scams in real time, alerting users before they interact with malicious content.

WhatsApp Device Linking Warning and Facebook Suspicious Alerts

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that protects users from scammers attempting to link their devices to WhatsApp accounts. Scammers often use deceptive tactics, such as tricking users into sharing their phone numbers or scanning QR codes, to gain unauthorized access.

The new device linking warning on WhatsApp will alert users when suspicious behavior is detected, showing the source of the request and providing a clear warning that the action could be a scam. This gives users the chance to reconsider before proceeding.

On Facebook, the company is testing suspicious-friend-request alerts. These alerts appear when a user receives or sends a request from an account that shows signs of suspicious activity, such as a lack of mutual friends or an unusual location.

These alerts are designed to help users make informed decisions about whether to accept or reject requests, ultimately blocking or avoiding potential scammers.

Advanced Scam Detection On Messenger and AI-powered Protection

Meta has expanded its advanced scam detection on Messenger, and the feature will be available in more countries starting this month.

This tool automatically detects patterns of common scams, such as suspicious job offers. When a chat is flagged, users are prompted to share recent messages with AI for review.

If a potential scam is detected, users will be given detailed information about common scam tactics, along with suggestions for either blocking the account or reporting it.

Meta’s commitment to fighting scams goes beyond just technology. In 2025 alone, the company removed over 159 million scam ads, with 92% of them taken down proactively.

Additionally, in a recent operation with global law enforcement, Meta investigators deactivated more than 150,000 scam-related accounts in Southeast Asia.

These actions disrupted sophisticated criminal syndicates involved in scams such as fraudulent cryptocurrency investments and fake law enforcement impersonations.

Through technological advancements and partnerships with law enforcement, Meta continues to work towards a safer experience for its users. As scams evolve, Meta’s ongoing investment in new tools and education remains crucial to staying ahead of cybercriminals.
