WASHINGTON — A Trump-backed INDYCAR race will roar through the heart of the nation’s capital this summer, with race organizers on Monday unveiling a street course that would send open-wheel cars past the National Mall, the Smithsonian museums and within view of the U.S. Capitol.

The event, called the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C., is scheduled for Aug. 22-23, 2026, and is being promoted as part of the national celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

According to INDYCAR, the event will be the first-ever auto race held on the National Mall and on the streets of Washington, D.C. The temporary course is designed as a 1.66-mile, seven-turn circuit with a 0.40-mile straightaway on Pennsylvania Avenue, where organizers say the pit lane also will be located.

The track map released Monday shows the course wrapping around a tightly controlled rectangle of federal streets, with cars racing along Pennsylvania Avenue, 3rd Street, Independence Avenue, 7th Street and 9th Street. Promotional renderings depict INDYCAR barriers and fencing set against some of the country’s most recognizable civic landmarks, including the U.S. Capitol, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and the Washington Monument.

In other words: one of the most symbolically loaded public spaces in America is being turned into a racecourse.

INDYCAR said the race was formalized earlier this year through an executive order signed by President Donald Trump titled “Celebrating American Greatness with American Motor Racing.” The event has the backing of federal officials including Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Ambassador Monica Crowley, along with Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Officials pitched the race Monday as a patriotic spectacle blending motorsports, tourism and the semiquincentennial celebration.

“This circuit is unlike any other street race we’ve seen,” two-time INDYCAR champion Josef Newgarden said in a statement released by the series. Newgarden said the course would combine a fast run down Pennsylvania Avenue with more technical corners near 9th Street.

Crowley cast the event as part of a long American tradition of competitive spectacle, saying the Freedom 250 would “renew a tremendous sense of patriotic pride.”

The renderings released Monday underscore just how unusual the event will look: catch fencing stretched across sightlines to the Capitol, concrete barriers along museum-lined streets, and an INDYCAR machine streaking past the Washington Monument and Air and Space Museum in images that feel part civic celebration, part political pageant, part dystopian fever dream.

The event is being billed as free and open to the public, and organizers say it will be broadcast nationally on FOX. Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the company led by Ted Leonsis, is serving as the event’s marketing, sponsorship and corporate hospitality sales partner.

Organizers said construction of the temporary circuit will begin later this summer, though they said roads near the Capitol and around the National Mall are expected to remain open and accessible through most of the buildout.

The Freedom 250 instantly becomes one of the strangest and most visually dramatic races on the 2026 motorsports calendar — a made-for-television street race staged amid monuments, museums and the seat of American government.

Whether it is remembered as a bold celebration, a logistical headache or a deeply bizarre use of the nation’s front yard remains to be seen.
