The New Jersey Turnpike Authority plans to test sticker tags equipped with chips on fleet vehicles. These could replace traditional E-ZPass transponders. Tom Feeney, an authority spokesperson, said the test run will happen soon.

“We are planning to put the stickers in Turnpike Authority fleet vehicles for an informal test run. That will happen pretty soon,” Feeney said to NJ.com. “If there aren’t any issues, we plan to make them available to NJ E-ZPass customers.”

Testing might wrap up by year’s end. Then the sticker tags could become available to drivers. The authority also runs the Garden State Parkway.

This new approach will save millions. Why? The stickers don’t need batteries. Back in 2022, the authority spent $8.4 million through the state E-ZPass Consortium to replace 920,000 transponders with worn-out batteries.

Transponder batteries last between eight and 10 years. The consortium serves the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, Atlantic City Expressway, Delaware River Port Authority, Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, Cape May County Bridge Commission, Burlington County Bridge Commission, and the Delaware River and Bay Authority bridges.

Massachusetts began using the stickers on March 1. Each new sticker has an RFID chip embedded in it that overhead toll gantries read.

Massachusetts Department of Transportation Administrator Jonathan Gulliver told WBUR that current transponders cost the state $6.70 each while the new stickers cost 55 cents. Drivers in Massachusetts get the toll sticker at no charge when it’s time to replace their transponder.

The stickers eliminate questions about where to place transponders on windshields. Smaller transponders allowed drivers to mount them near the rear view mirror where they wouldn’t block vision.

The sticker also gets rid of those Velcro-like mounting strips. Drivers had to stick those to the windshield first before mounting the transponder.
