Man dead after hours long standoff, shots fired at troopers
NEW PHILADELPHIA – A standoff ended with a man dead Monday in the Schuylkill Valley.
State Police at Frackville said Kevin Carlos Cole, 44, of New Philadelphia was found dead by a tactical team after an hours-long standoff there.
Troopers said the incident was sparked by a reported domestic incident at a home on Valley Street around 10am.
Cole, troopers alleged, fired shots at responding troopers and were able to safely get a 35-year-old woman to safety before setting up a perimeter.
The State Police Special Emergency Response Team, their tactical unit, responded along with the Troop L Major Case Team. Eventually, the SERT team made entry into the home and found Cole dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Troopers called the incident isolated and said there is no threat to the public.
Police officers from across Schuylkill County responded, including Shenandoah, Frackville, Minersville, Orwigsburg, Saint Clair, Schuylkill Haven, as well as the Tamaqua Area School District and the Schuylkill County Sheriff’s Office.
