Four Hackensack police officers saved a 78-year-old man who went into cardiac arrest Wednesday, March 4, near the Midtown Bridge Approach. Officers Ryan Conlon and Frank Caneja from the Emergency Services Unit responded with Patrolmen Jems Peralta and Robert Oropeza after someone called about a man who had fallen.

They started CPR compressions right away. Conlon and Caneja both have EMT certifications, which police officials said made the difference.

“Upon arrival, the officers, who have advanced medical training, immediately took over CPR compressions and initiated life-saving efforts for the patient,” said Capt. Gregory Zisa, according to the Daily Voice.com.

The team used an automated external defibrillator. They also used a bag-valve mask and oxygen. The patient was revived before paramedics took him to a hospital.

Peralta was sworn in last January, 2025, while Oropeza joined the force last July. All officers get CPR training at the department, and those who hold EMT certifications can keep building their medical skills.

“This event highlights the importance of CPR training and the high standards that Hackensack Police Officers are held to,” the department said in a release.

Police Chief Michael Antista thanked the Hackensack Fire Department and Hackensack University Medical Center ALS/BLS crews who responded and took over care.

“Interdepartmental cooperation and cohesion are at the heart of successful emergency services operations and the Hackensack Police Department is dedicated to providing the highest level of service to our residents and visitors of the City of Hackensack,” the press release says.

This incident shows what can happen when emergency responders work together quickly and efficiently, bringing their different skills to bear on a crisis that demands immediate action. Both Conlon and Caneja possess EMT certification, which contributed to saving a life, according to the department.
