Octopus Newsroom Transforms Workflows At Griffin Media’s Oklahoma Stations

Octopus Newsroom, a provider of newsroom computer systems, has completed a transformation of the news production workflows for Griffin Media’s KWTV Oklahoma City (CBS) and KOTV Tulsa, Okla. (CBS).

The transition, which Griffin Media began planning in 2024, creates a flexible workflow for the two stations, which produce more than 100 hours of news per week. The system integrates with existing technology including Sony ELC, Bitcentral and VizRT.

“When we made the decision to move to Octopus Newsroom, I was looking for more than just a new system — I was looking for a true modernization of how our newsroom creates, organizes and delivers content,” Nathan Elliott, KWTV director of content, said. “Octopus has absolutely delivered.”

Elliott said the integration with third-party partners was seamless, making implementation smoother than anticipated.

Griffin Media has served Oklahoma since 1908. In addition to its two television stations, the company operates five radio stations. Because severe weather coverage is a primary focus for the stations, the production workflows required high levels of agility.

“Working with Scott Fitzgerald on our Octopus rollout brought Griffin Media into the future of newscast producing,” Kristie Webb, KOTV news director of content, said. “The system allows for easily built and customizable rundowns.”

Fitzgerald, Octopus Newsroom U.S. director of sales, worked with the stations to customize shortcuts for producers.
