FBI Arrests U.S. Government Contractor Accused of Stealing $46 Million

In an international law enforcement success, the FBI has arrested John Daghita, a U.S. government contractor accused of stealing more than $46 million worth of cryptocurrency from the United States Marshals Service (USMS).

The agency, which manages seized digital assets from criminal cases, discovered the massive theft during a recent audit of its cryptocurrency accounts.

This high-profile case underscores the rising challenge of insider threats and the growing role of blockchain forensics in tracing illicit funds.

According to investigators, Daghita allegedly exploited his privileged access to digital asset management systems, transferring funds through multiple wallets and attempting to obscure the transactions across decentralized exchanges and crypto mixers.

The FBI confirmed that the successful apprehension highlights the increasing convergence of cybersecurity, financial crimes, and global cooperation in tackling high-stakes digital thefts.

International Tactical Operation

The arrest was carried out in Saint Martin, a Caribbean island, following a coordinated international investigation between U.S. and French authorities.

According to FBI Director Kash Patel, the operation involved a joint raid between the FBI and elite tactical units from the French Gendarmerie Nationale, including the International Cooperation Team Serious Crime Unit in Saint Martin and the Groupe d’intervention de la Gendarmerie nationale (GIGN) based in Guadeloupe.

The nighttime raid led to Daghita’s capture without resistance. Authorities reportedly recovered encrypted hardware wallets, multiple identification documents, and electronic devices suspected to contain private keys and records of digital transactions.

Cybercrime analysts believe the team relied heavily on advanced chain analysis tools to monitor the flow of stolen funds.

While cryptocurrencies provide a layer of pseudonymity, every transaction leaves a traceable footprint on the blockchain.

Through blockchain forensics, investigators can analyze wallet behavior, identify mixing patterns, and trace eventual cash-out attempts on exchanges.

When actors try to launder large sums of cryptocurrency, law enforcement can link transactions to real-world identities through associated IP addresses, exchange KYC data, and recurring operational errors.

In this case, those digital breadcrumbs led directly to Daghita’s location in Saint Martin, demonstrating that cybercriminals cannot permanently hide behind digital anonymity.

The incident has raised serious security concerns regarding federal digital asset custody and contractor access controls.

The U.S. Marshals Service often manages cryptocurrencies seized from ransomware groups, cybercrime operations, and darknet marketplaces.

A breach by an internal contractor highlights the urgent need for better digital asset governance and Zero Trust security frameworks.

Experts recommend that agencies strengthen security measures such as multi-signature wallets, hardware security modules (HSMs) for key management, continuous privilege monitoring, and role-based access control (RBAC) to limit exposure to sensitive wallets.

Implementing behavioral anomaly detection systems can also help flag unauthorized transactions before significant losses occur.

FBI Director Patel stated that the agency will continue to collaborate globally to bring digital fraudsters to justice: “No matter where they hide or how they disguise their crimes, those who steal from the American people will be found and held accountable.”

The FBI and Department of Justice are now conducting a full forensic audit to recover the stolen assets and assess potential systemic vulnerabilities across federal cryptocurrency custody systems.
