On a winter evening in Bucks County, more than 100 LGBTQ+ youth and friends from dozens of area middle and high schools gathered for Castles in the Sky: A Queer Prom on Cloud Nine, hosted by the Rainbow Room at Planned Parenthood Keystone. In a political climate where LGBTQ+ young people are increasingly targeted in school policies, legislation, and public discourse, this queer prom hosted by Doylestown’s Michener Art Museum was more than a dance — it was a declaration of belonging. And thanks to generous support from the Rainbow Room, every part of it was free.
Under rainbow lights and castle silhouettes, youth arrived dressed in velvet, sequins, suits, gowns, and everything in between — greeted by a red carpet, a packed dance floor, cupcakes, pizza, and a Photo Booth full of laughter. They came to celebrate, but also to belong.
“My soul is overflowing with gratitude,” one parent wrote afterward. “My kid has struggled mightily the last two years, and this was the happiest I’ve seen him in ages.” Another reflected that the love poured into the evening felt like “the love and support of 1,000 moms in one space.”
For one night, joy was not debated. It was embodied.
