BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — February 26, 2026
The Monroe County Coroner has identified the woman who was killed in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday evening on South Rockport Road.
Theadora Wellman, 74, of Bloomington, was pronounced dead at the scene after the crash near S. Rockport Road and W. Stansifer Court, according to Monroe County Coroner Jeff Hall, who said the decedent’s next of kin has been notified. Hall said an autopsy has been scheduled to help determine Wellman’s cause and manner of death. The crash remains an active and ongoing investigation.
Deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office were called at about 6:16 p.m. Feb. 25, 2026, after a report of a traffic crash with injuries. Preliminary evidence indicates a northbound Subaru crossed left of center into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a Kia, the sheriff’s office said. A third vehicle, a Toyota, was also involved.
The Subaru’s driver, a 48-year-old Bloomington man, was transported to the hospital with injuries. A 7-year-old child who was a passenger in the Subaru was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries, according to authorities. The Toyota’s driver, a 58-year-old Bloomington man, was transported with minor injuries.
Investigators with the Monroe County Major Crash Investigation Team responded, and the roadway was closed for several hours for reconstruction. Authorities said additional details will be released as they become available.
