Construction is now officially underway on a new dedicated office space for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) in Lakeland, marking a significant step forward in a project that has been in discussion for several years.
The new facility is being developed in The Lake District
The SCSO portion of the space will house personnel serving the Lakeland community, including school resource officers assigned to the Lakeland School System. The office is also expected to serve as a coordination hub for SCSO school resource officers throughout Shelby County.
Lakeland Mayor Josh Roman told Lakeland Currents this initiative will help keep Lakeland crime low at a fixed cost. “Take a look at Millington,” he said. “Their police department cost around $4 million a year so whatever we can do to strengthen our relationship with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is a positive for us. I will continue giving SCSO every possible resource to put us in the best position to continue with the lowest crime rate in Shelby County”
The remaining space will accommodate Lakeland city staff, likely including planning and code enforcement personnel. As the city has grown, the need for expanded administrative space has increased, prompting officials to explore multiple options over the past three years.
Under the agreement, the City of Lakeland will hold the lease for the space. Funding for the lease will come from existing budget allocations previously designated for private security services and will be redirected to support this public safety initiative.
City leaders have emphasized that establishing a physical SCSO presence in Lakeland supports ongoing commercial growth in the Canada Road corridor and enhances public safety coverage. The new office is also viewed as a practical and cost-effective solution to strengthen law enforcement visibility and coordination while the city evaluates long-term public safety planning. Eariler this year, construction began on the new Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) District 4 Headquarters, also in Lakeland, located off Highway 64.
With construction now in progress as of February 25, 2026, the project represents a major milestone in Lakeland’s efforts to expand services and infrastructure alongside continued residential and commercial growth.
