Metro plans to update public on North County Expansion Project

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to hold an online community update on its Interstate 5 expansion project Wednesday evening.

The North County Enhancements Project covers the freeway roughly between Castaic and the Newhall Pass and began in 2021, with the goal of preparing the I-5 for growth expected to hit the Santa Clarita Valley in the next few decades. The city is expected to add 25,000 new residents by 2035, according to Metro.

In November, Metro announced a new end date for the project in March 2027. By the time the project is complete, Metro plans to have added one new carpool lane and truck lanes in each direction, auxiliary lanes between selected on- and off-ramps and four new soundwalls.

According to the news release announcing Wednesday’s workshop, project staff are expected to “share upcoming construction timelines, what to expect in (residents’) area, and answer (residents’) questions live.”

At Metro’s November workshop, Metro spokeswoman Saroya Sandiford thanked community members for their patience with road closures and other driver impacts on the I-5.

“We know this stage has brought a lot of extended closures of ramps … (and) heavy equipment along our project corridor. We just want to say thank you for your patience,” Sandiford said. “It’s all gearing up for the final stage.”

The Zoom workshop is slated to begin at 6 p.m. The meeting can be found at us02web.zoom.us/j/99714777647.
